Translation - Song "Tienes un plan" (You have a plan)...and His timing

"One of the most powerful ways God reveals His sovereignty is through timing." J. Stumbo

In February 2011, our 3 month old son had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was scheduled for open heart surgery. The first sermon preached by our Senior Pastor, Dr. Mizraim Esquilín, that year was about Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". But in those first weeks of the year we had received difficult news. At that time we did not understand how all this could be part of the "plans to prosper you and not to harm you". This is the story behind the song “Tienes un Plan” (You have a plan). (Note - Part of the lyrics: “You have a plan and it’ll be fulfilled. While I’m waiting I will praise you. You have a plan and it’ll be fulfilled. I don’t have answers but I’m filled with your peace. Blessed is the one who trust in you. You have a plan and it’ll be fulfilled. Your are my Mighty God”)

The surgery was successful but my son’s health problems were not over. Now I have a better understanding of what God intended to teach us with the song. We always want to sing with a complete testimony. We always want evident progress. But by faith we can patiently wait. It is possible to experience the peace of God without human answers.

In the spring/summer of 2014 we recorded the vocals of the album "Plan de Vuelo", the new project of 33dc ministry, including the song "Tienes un Plan." We were moving as a family to the United States and I didn’t know how everything would work out. But, I never imagined that the album release and the promotional activities would be during my chemo treatment; and that the first single would be “Tienes un Plan”.

Psalm 105:19 (NIV) states, "till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the Lord proved him true." The word "proved "can also be translated as to refine, to smelt, like a goldsmith. The Word of the God is not inactive until its fulfillment. It is always doing something in us.

We have the good news of salvation, the gospel, with very great and precious promises. May His Word, may the gospel, teaches us, refines us, purifies us as we wait the fulfillment of the promises. I believe in God’s sovereignty;  I believe in His plan; and I trust his timing.

Meditaciones de Fe - Manejo del Temor (Parte 3) - Te presento al Sr. CA Marker

Esta reflexión fue escrita para el Blog de AMEC: Casa de Alabanza. Manejo del Temor Parte (3).

 

 

No sé si es por entrenamiento o por manía pero a mí me encanta documentar las cosas. Así que pedí las copias de los laboratorios para mi archivo personal. Y ahí estaba la enfermera explicándome los diferentes resultados cuando me dijo: "Este es tu "CA marker", esto lo vamos a monitorear para ver cómo estás respondiendo al tratamiento".

Según el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer, los marcadores de tumores son sustancias producidas por las células cancerosas o por otras células del cuerpo como respuesta al cáncer o a ciertas afecciones benignas (no cancerosas). Los marcadores de tumores pueden usarse para ayudar a diagnosticar el cáncer, para ayudar a predecir la reacción de un paciente a ciertas terapias, a revisar la reacción de un paciente al tratamiento, o a determinar si el cáncer ha regresado.

Llegué a casa y entré al foro de discusión de un "website" que visito con frecuencia. Me di cuenta que en ese grupo de "Breast Cancer Stage 4" el "Sr. CA Marker" era un individuo bastante popular. Leí frases como "llevo 10 meses con mis niveles estables", "mis marcadores han estado subiendo durante los últimos 3 meses", "mi doctor está preocupado, tengo que volver a quimioterapia"...abandoné la discusión.

Ya que aparentemente el Sr. CA Marker había llegado para quedarse decidí presentárselo a Jesús y más o menos así transcurrió la conversación:

"Hola, te presento al Sr. CA Marker", dije yo.

 

No había terminado de hablar cuando el individuo comenzó con su discurso. 

"Yo soy el que determina el éxito del tratamiento", dijo con orgullo.

 

Jesús me dijo: "Porque yo soy el Señor tu Dios, que sostiene tu diestra, que te dice: “No temas, yo te ayudaré.” (Isaías 41:13, LBLA)

 

Y aquel decía: "Yo soy el que dice si el cáncer se ha ido o regresa"

 

Jesús volvió a hablarme: "Yo soy el buen pastor; y conozco mis ovejas, y las mías me conocen" (Juan 10:14)

 

Y el Sr. CA Marker decía más fuerte: "Yo la voy a acompañar de ahora en adelante"

 

Y Jesús seguía diciéndome: "Yo, yo soy el que borro tus rebeliones por amor de mí mismo, y no me acordaré de tus pecados." (Isaías 43:25)

 

El Sr. CA Marker se veía frustrado y dejó de hablar. Pero Jesús siguió hablándome...

 

"Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entre, se salvará. Será como una oveja que entra y sale y encuentra pastos." (Juan 10:9, DHH)

"Yo soy la vid, y ustedes son las ramas. El que permanece unido a mí, y yo unido a él, da mucho fruto; pues sin mí no pueden ustedes hacer nada." (Juan 15:5, DHH)

 

"Así dice el Señor, tu Redentor, el Santo de Israel: Yo soy el Señor tu Dios, que te enseña para tu beneficio, que te conduce por el camino en que debes andar." (Isaías 48:17, LBLA)

"Yo soy el Alfa y la Omega, el principio y el fin, el primero y el último." (Apocalipsis 22:13)

Y por último me dijo: "¡Tened ánimo; yo soy, no temáis!" (Mateo 14:27)

 

El Sr. CA Marker quedó destruído. Es más callado y tímido de lo que percibí la primera vez. Ya no vive en mi mente, ahora vive en un cajón de mi mesita de noche.

Todos en la vida tenemos un "CA marker". Quizás es un pecado recurrente, una adicción, una fobia, depresión, soledad, malos pensamientos, baja autoestima, raíz de amargura, una imposibilidad, sentido de culpa, etc. Algo que se empeña en acompañarnos de por vida. Todos tenemos la opción de alimentarlo con nuestro temor y hacerlo poderoso. Pero todos también tenemos la opción de llevarlo a Jesús, el Verbo encarnado. Aquel que puede decir con autoridad cada "Yo Soy" que registra la Escritura porque El es Dios.

Translation - Fear Management (Part 3) - Let me introduce to you Mr. CA Marker

I don’t know if it's by education and training or a personal obsession but I love to document things. So, I asked for the copies of every test results for my personal file. The nurse was going over the different documents when she said: "This is your CA marker. We will be monitoring this to see how you are responding to treatment."
 

According to the National Institute of Cancer, tumor markers are substances that are produced by cancer or by other cells in the body in response to cancer or certain benign (noncancerous) conditions. Tumor markers may also be measured periodically during cancer therapy. A decrease in the level of a tumor marker or a return to the marker’s normal level may indicate that the cancer is responding to treatment, whereas no change or an increase may indicate that the cancer is not responding.

I went home and did my login to a discussion board of a website that I visit frequently. I realized that "Mr. CA Marker" was a pretty popular guy in that group of "Breast Cancer Stage 4". I read phrases such as "my levels have been stable for the last 10 months" "my levels have been increasing for the last three months", "My doctor is concerned, I will start another round of chemotherapy"... I left the discussion board.

Since, it was apparent that Mr. CA Marker was here to stay I decided to introduce him to Jesus and the conversation was something like this:

"Hello, let me introduce to you Mr. CA Marker" I said.

I had not finished the last word when the guy began with his speech.

"I'm the one who determines the success of her treatment" he said arrogantly.

Jesus said to me, "For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you" (Isaiah 41:13, NIV)

And he said: "I am the one who says if the cancer is gone or it has returned"

Jesus spoke to me: "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—" (John 10:14, NIV)

And Mr. CA Marker said louder, "I'm her lifelong companion from now on"

But Jesus kept saying, "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more” (Isaiah 43:25, NIV) 

Mr. CA Marker looked frustrated at this point and went silent. But Jesus kept talking...

"I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. (John 10: 9, NIV)

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15: 5, NIV)

"This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go." (Isaiah 48:17, NIV)

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." (Revelation 22:13, NIV)

And finally He said to me, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27, NIV)

Mr. CA Marker was absolutely shattered. He is definitely quieter now. I could say he is very shy actually. He does not live in my mind anymore, now he lives in a drawer of the nightstand.

Everyone has a "CA marker”. Perhaps it is a recurring sin, an addiction, a phobia, depression, loneliness, negative thoughts, low self-esteem, bitterness, a limitation, guilt, etc.  There is always something that wants to be our lifelong companion. All of us have the choice to feed "our CA marker" with fear and make it more powerful. But instead, we may bring it to Jesus, the Incarnate Word of God. The One who can say with authority every "I Am" recorded in the Scripture because He is God.

Algo hermoso pero no cierto...

"The note reads in part: "Mom, you are the best mom in the world. You love me, take care of me and protect me from danger. You would never leave me"

Mi niña hermosa comenzó la celebración del Día de las Madres desde temprano en la semana. Me regaló una notita que decía en parte: "tú nunca me dejarías". Sé lo que ella quiso decir, me conmovieron sus palabras, pero les confieso que no pude evitar leer la frase con algo de incomodidad, creo que hasta me salió una mueca.

 

Luego me di cuenta que la enfermedad sólo me ha hecho más consciente de lo que ya era una realidad desde antes de la enfermedad. En algún momento nuestros sistemas de apoyo sí pueden faltar. En algún momento, enfermos o no, los padres ya no estaremos. La Biblia dice: "El hombre, como la hierba son sus días; Florece como la flor del campo, Que pasó el viento por ella, y pereció, Y su lugar no la conocerá más." (Salmo 103:15-16)

 

Pero entonces recordé este pasaje bíblico que relata el momento cuando el Rey David busca a Mefi-boset, nieto del Rey Saúl, luego de la muerte del Rey Saúl y de su hijo Jonatán:

 

"Y le dijo David: No tengas temor, porque yo a la verdad haré contigo misericordia por amor de Jonatán tu padre, y te devolveré todas las tierras de Saúl tu padre; y tú comerás siempre a mi mesa." (2 Samuel 9:7)

 

El gran reto que tenemos como padres es enseñarle a nuestros hij@s que Jesús es "nuestro David". Mefi-boset era discapacitado, estaba despojado de su herencia, probablemente tenía miedo, estaba escondido porque él era el sucesor al trono convirtiendo a David en un rival, y no tenía una relación con el rey. Así también éramos nosotros. Pero Dios...que es rico en misericordia tomó la iniciativa y nos salvó con su gracia (Efesios 2:4-5), tal y como Mefi-boset recibió gracia a manos de David.

 

Nuestros hij@s deben aprender que cuando no estemos, o cuando  los sistemas de apoyo falten, Jesús es la voz que ABSOLUTAMENTE  SIEMPRE dirá: "No tengas temor", "Haré contigo misericordia" y "Siempre comerás a mi mesa".

 

Nos ayude Dios a guiar a nuestros hijo@s cada día hacia Jesús. Y que sea El quien reciba las cartas de amor escritas en el corazón de los nuestros. Cartas que digan con toda seguridad: "Tú nunca me dejarías"

 

¡Feliz Día de las Madres!

 

Translation - Something beautiful but not true...

My beautiful girl started the “Mothers’ Day” celebration very early in the week. She gave me a note that reads in part: "You would never leave me." I know what she meant, my heart was touched by her words, but I must confess that I couldn’t help but feel some uneasiness when I read the phrase.

Then I realized that the disease has only made me more aware of what was already true before the disease. At some point our support systems may fail. At some point, sick or not, parents are no longer present. The Bible says: "The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more." (Psalm 103: 15-16, NIV)

But then I remembered the story when King David looked out for Mephibosheth, grandson of King Saul, after the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan,

"Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table." (2 Samuel 9: 7)

Our big challenge as parents is to teach our children that Jesus is "our David". Mephibosheth had a physical disability, he was not enjoying the benefits of his inheritance, probably was fearful and hiding because he was the heir to the throne turning David into a rival, and had no relationship with the King. So were us. ... But God who is rich in mercy took the initiative and saved us by grace (Ephesians 2: 4-5), just as Mephibosheth received grace at the hands of David.

Our children must learn that Jesus is the voice that will always say, "Do not fear", "I will show you kindness" and "you will always eat at my table."

May the Lord help us to lead our children to Jesus every day. May He be the one receiving love notes written in their hearts that say with absolute confidence: “You would never leave me”

Meditaciones de Fe - Manejo del Temor (Part 2) - ¿Quién es éste?

"Y levantándose, reprendió al viento, y dijo al mar: Calla, enmudece. Y cesó el viento, y se hizo grande bonanza. Y les dijo: ¿Por qué estáis así amedrentados? ¿Cómo no tenéis fe? Entonces temieron con gran temor, y se decían el uno al otro: ¿Quién es éste, que aun el viento y el mar le obedecen?" (Marcos 4:39-41)

 

Cuando finalmente le explicamos a nuestra niña de 8 años acerca del cáncer y le hablamos del tratamiento  y los efectos secundarios, ella preguntó qué teníamos que hacer. Le dijimos que seguir orando y cooperar todos como familia durante el tratamiento. Entonces ella dijo: "Pero es que yo oro todos los días, por las mañanas y por las noches, para que Dios sane a Frandiego y Dios todavía no ha hecho algo" (Nota: Su hermanito de 4 años convulsa, toma aproximadamente 16 medicinas diariamente para sus diversas condiciones de salud, y aún no habla ni camina).

 

Eso fue "un golpe bajo". Ahí estaba ella diciendo con toda honestidad lo que nosotros a veces pensamos pero no expresamos por querer ser "buenos cristianos" y "políticamente correctos". Muchas veces el temor viene porque no entendemos las veces que Jesús ha decidido "dormir" en medio de nuestras tormentas. Muchas veces el temor viene de no saber cómo asimilar lo que El hace..."¿Quién es éste?", como decían los discípulos. Muchas veces el temor es que no sabemos cómo creer otra vez cuando la última vez recibimos exactamente lo contrario a lo que pedimos o esperamos.

 

Yo no pretendo explicar aquí los misterios de la oración no contestada. A veces pedimos mal (Santiago 4:3). A veces hay oposición espiritual (Daniel 10:11-13). A veces es un asunto de no permanecer (Juan 15:7). A veces es un asunto de la voluntad de Dios (1Juan 5:14-15). Y hay muchas otras cosas que simplemente van en la cajita de "misterios sin resolver" y que por fe el día que estemos frente al Señor y ya no veamos "por espejo oscuramente", como dice 1 Corintios 13:12, dejarán de ser misterios.

 

Pero, ¿qué le decimos a una niña de 8 años...qué nos predicamos a nosotros mismos?

1. Como padres tenemos que reconocer que necesitamos la gracia de Dios.  Nosotros podemos llevarla a una tienda de juguetes, a Disney, etc. Podemos enseñarle y modelar un ejemplo cristiano. Pero nosotros no podemos crear o simular una experiencia de fe. Nuestros hijos necesitan un encuentro con Jesús y para eso dependemos enteramente de la gracia de Dios.

 

2. Nuestras circunstancias pueden cambiar pero la naturaleza de Dios no cambia. "En él no hay mudanza ni sombra de variación" (Santiago 1:17).

• El es Santo - En otras palabras, El es el "rompe curvas" por excelencia. El  está "fuera de toda liga". El es "above and beyond". Por eso no siempre vamos a entender lo que El hace. Por eso hay veces que no vamos a saber en cuál categoría ubicarlo.
• El es Bueno - El es total y abosolutamente bueno. El no puede ser mejor o peor. Es bueno en sus acciones y en sus motivaciones. 
•  El es Justo - Y no es por lo que hace o deja de hacer. Simplemente, El es la definición de la justicia. Si El se mueve a la derecha, allí está la justicia. Si El se mueve a la izquierda allí está la justicia.

Nuestro mundo puede estar de cabeza. Pero en cualquier día y en cualquier lugar podemos confiar en la naturaleza inmutable de Dios revelada en Su palabra. El es bueno. El es justo. El es santo. El es Dios. Ninguna tormenta puede cambiar eso.

 

3. Cuando se trata de sanidad del cuerpo podemos orar confiados. Yo creo que en la Cruz Dios llevó nuestros dolores y que por su llaga fuimos curados (Isaías 53:5). Yo he sido testigo de milagros de sanidad. Como mamá nunca voy a dejar de orar y creer por sanidad para mi hijo. Y no dejo de orar por salud y vida para mí. Yo creo como el salmista que podemos ver la bondad del Señor en la tierra de los vivientes (Salmo 27:13). Pero yo oro con la complicidad de los que saben un gran secreto. Y es que de todas formas este mundo no es mi hogar ni este cuerpo es la palabra final. Yo sé que por el sacrificio de Cristo la sanidad está garantizada, aquí o allá en la eternidad (Apocalipsis 21:4). Y también sé que estaremos aquí hasta que el propósito divino para nuestra vida se cumpla. Ni un día más, ni un día menos.

 

Nosotros le llevamos una ventaja a los discípulos. Luego de la Cruz y la resurrección nosotros sabemos  "¿Quién es éste?". Por la fe hemos visto su costado herido y las llagas que garantizan nuestra sanidad. Por su sacrificio tenemos acceso para contemplar la bondad de Dios y su santidad sin temor a su justicia.

 

Nuestra oración es que Julietta y todo aquel que tiene temor de volver a creer porque no puede entender cómo Dios manejó las tormentas de su vida en el pasado, puedan tener la convicción de que El está en la barca. Que las tormentas no distorsionen la imagen y naturaleza de Dios revelada en la Biblia. Que como nos enseñó el Pastor Jacinto Esquilín, puedan recordar que un Cristo "dormido" es más poderoso que una tormenta despierta. Que puedan escuchar la voz inconfundible y santa de Aquel que todavía hoy calla y enmudece los vientos.

Translation: Fear Management (Part 2) - Who is this?

"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4: 39-41)

When we finally explained to our 8 year old girl about my cancer and talked about the treatment and expected side effects, she wondered what was next. We encouraged her to keep praying and talked about the importance of everyone’s cooperation during the treatment. Then she said: "But, I pray every day, mornings and evenings, and ask God to heal Frandiego and He has not done anything yet" (Note: Her 4 years old brother has a seizure disorder, takes about 16 medicines daily for his various health conditions, and do not speak or walk).

That was "a hit below the belt". Here she was saying something that has crossed our minds but we don’t express as we want to be "good Christians" and "politically correct". Often our fear comes from not understanding the times that Jesus has decided to "sleep" in the midst of our storms. Often the fear comes from not being able to assimilate what he does ... "Who is this?" as the disciples said. Often the fear comes from not knowing how to believe again when the last time we received exactly the opposite of what we asked or expected.

I do not pretend to explain the mysteries of the unanswered prayer. Sometimes we ask with wrong motives (James 4: 3). Sometimes there is spiritual resistance (Daniel 10: 11-13). Sometimes it's a matter of not remaining in Him (John 15: 7). Sometimes it is a matter of not asking according to the will of God (1 John 5: 14-15). And there are many other things that just go in the box of "Unsolved Mysteries". I believe that one day we will stand before the Lord no longer seeing a reflection as in a mirror, as 1 Corinthians 13:12 states, and what we know now in part will be fully  known .

But what do we say to an 8 years old girl? What do we preach to ourselves?

1. As parents we have to realize that we need God's grace. We can bring our daughter to Toys R Us, to Disney, etc. We can teach her and modeling a Christian character. But we can’t create or simulate an experience of faith. Our children need an encounter with Jesus and for that we depend entirely on God's grace.

2. Our circumstances may change, but God's nature does not change. "He does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).

·        He is holy - In other words, he breaks all the records. He is out of any league.  He is above and beyond. That’s why we don’t always understand what He does. Many times we won’t know where to categorize him.

·        He is good - He is totally and absolutely good. He can’t be better or worse. He is good in his actions and motives.

·        He is righteous – His righteousness is not related to what he does or doesn’t. He is the definition of righteousness. If He moves to the right, righteousness is there. If He moves to the left, righteousness is there.

On any day, and anywhere we can trust in the unchanging nature of God revealed in His word. He is good. He is righteous. He is holy. He is God. No storm can ever change that.

3. When it comes to healing I always pray with confidence. I believe that on the cross Jesus was crushed for our iniquities and that by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53: 5). I have witnessed healing miracles. As a mom I'll never stop praying and believing that God can heal my son. And I keep praying for health and life for myself. I believe as the Psalmist that we can see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). But I also pray with the boldness of those who know a big secret. This “secret” is that anyways this world is not my home and this body is not the final word. I know that by the sacrifice of Christ, our healing is guaranteed either here or in eternity (Revelations 21: 4). And I know that we will be here until God's purpose for our lives is fulfilled.

We know better than the disciples. After the Cross and Jesus’ resurrection there is no any doubt about "Who is this?" By faith we have seen the wounds that guarantee our healing. By his sacrifice we have access to gaze God's goodness and holiness without fearing his righteousness.

Our prayer is that Julietta and anyone who is afraid to believe again because doesn’t understand how God handled some “storms” in the past, may have the conviction that He is in the boat. We pray that storms do not distort God’s loving nature as revealed in the Bible. We pray that you can remember as a dear pastor once taught us: that a “sleeping” Christ is more powerful than a storm fully awake. We pray that you can hear the unique and holy voice of the One who still say to the waves “quiet, be still”.
